My dad's VA disability rating is at 80%, and he's 60 years old. He finds it harder to work these days because of his disability.

Can he sign up for Social Security?

We put in an SSDI application 14 months ago, hearing that the older you are, the better your chances at approval.

If he's unable to work, he's eligible to put in a VA claim for Individual Unemployability (TDIU) which compensates at the full 100% rate. Additionally, he can apply for SSDI, though the decision process could span from 6 months to potentially over five years. Distinct from Social Security, a VA IU claim typically resolves within a few months.

The VA and Social Security are separate, but I've heard that having a high VA rating or TDIU can still somewhat help.
